Success through people.
There are kind of leaders who focuses on how well they led, getting the best skill and best tools and imitating the great leaders on how to lead but why we still fails as a leader? Why we can’t drive people toward the goal? Why we shun away success, and so it is scarce, limited and unreachable.
Here is a short story happened recently from one of our store. One of our service crew spent some time cleaning the dirty containers we used for our liquid waste. And amazingly, it looks like the first time we bought it after he did it. And we congratulated him with might be a simple accomplishment to some of you but not for us. Then I ask him with a series of question though i skipped the first question why he is cleaning it, as for obvious reason, it is dirty. So i asked him why it is dirty? Obviously it is coming from an accumulated dried fats deposits in the deep sections and corners. I asked him again why do you have an accumulated dried fats deposits in your container? We are not rinsing these container every time we dispose our liquid waste. Will it cost you if you will take few seconds to clean this? Nada! This fats can be easily wash away with waters specially they are fresh. Great! Then I reminded him that every people, equipment, materials that you are in our store represents our business, it easy for our customer to shy away when they see something isn’t right. Specific to this situation, true success in not showing people we successfully clean things when they get messed up but success is maintaining things right everytime. We end up our discussion that thanking him of the solutions he offered after we discovered the true root cause of our problem and i trust him that the future will improve.
You may have a great story as well that you can share but let me wrap up sharing some key points and principles i follow on how i lead people towards success rather to tell people how to do it successfully.
Build relationship with your people, maintain positive relationship with your people, treating the way people should be treated and recognising that individuals are unique, i would say a pre-requisites of the four below.
As leader we always share our goal, it gives direction to people and easy remind them to go back if they our out of track.
Celebrate small success, people feels good if they feel valued and their efforts are valued. Authentic leadership is being built from these small events but consistent.
Listen and don’t be afraid to ask why, it is trough the series of why that the true root cause of the problem will surface but it will require us to listen patiently and withhold judgement.
Recognise that people support what they help create, you may have the best solution but you have to hold it and have to draw this idea out from people and let them owned it.
These are only 5 in the list, it sounds simple, it is not an overnight thing but possible. Our success here is not to transform your team into something special but our success is maintain everything in their right way all the time. Remember If you support your people t0 become successful then it will directly contributes to your goal. If your people are successful but your business is not then something is wrong with your goal so it always fall backs to leadership.
